Common reasons for overheating radiator system
Your car’s engine is made up of a series of high-performance components that undergo combustion to transfer heat into kinetic energy. The radiator system (also known as the cooling system) consists mainly of a radiator, fan, thermostat, water pump and a series of hoses that work together to keep the engine temperature stable. Low Radiator Coolant Levels
If you’ve forgotten to refill your coolant and it runs out, the radiator wouldn’t have any coolant to flow through the radiator. New cars often have a reminder that lights up whenever the coolant level is low. If the light comes on even when you are constantly refilling your coolant, there could be a leak in the radiator. Failing Radiator Fan
The radiator fan’s responsibility is to keep your car from overheating. Water Pump failure
The water pump uses an impeller to constantly pump coolant through the hoses and passageways of the radiator system. In most cars, the impeller is made out of metal. It can also be damaged by high temperature if the radiator’s temperature constantly goes beyond the point the impeller can withstand.
Blockage in the radiator
Contaminant build-up from rust and dust inside of the radiator get mixed up with the fluid and creates a blockage in the system. If identified early, it can be cleaned, but extensive damages can happen if the driver is unaware of the blockage. If you notice your coolant level in the reservoir is high but there’s little coolant being pumped into the radiator, it could be because of a blockage.
Symptoms of overheating could be easily detected if you keep an eye on the temperature gauge. If you see the heat rising beyond normal towards the red zone, it means a something in the radiator system has failed and your engine isn’t getting enough coolant. Also, keep an eye on the front hood. If there’s smoke coming out from the hood, it means the engine is burning up. Pull over right away and shut down your vehicle. Wait until your vehicle cools down before driving your way to the mechanic. Whenever you move your vehicle, check if there’s any coolant leak underneath the vehicle. Always keep a large bottle of water in your car that you can add into the radiator in case it overheats. Remember, let the vehicle to cool down first before adding water.
